CPSC TEXTILE STEWARDSHIP

Textiles are a growing waste stream ripe with opportunities for better materials management and promotion of repair, reuse, upcycle businesses aligned with sustainability. CalRecycle reports that over one million tons of textiles are disposed of each year in California, with no permanent program in place to properly handle this growing waste stream.

The California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) is leading several textile recovery projects, making partnerships and policy development that expand circular fiber systems with reduced cost-burden on local government and taxpayers through producer engagement. Check out CPSC’s initiatives in the textile sector below.

CPSC’S TEXTILE RECOVERY HANDLERS MAP

Hub

In 2022, CPSC created the textile resource map by interviewing local diversion champions in California. Then, the map was expanded by adding reuse, repair, and recycling businesses, thrift stores, craft centers, and NGOs all over the country through extensive internet searches, surveys, and phone calls. CPSC is constantly updating this map as new organizations, interested in helping create a circular economy, are found. This chart is the culmination of many months of hard work, and dedication to EPR and sustainability.

TEXTILE STEWARDSHIP AND PRESS

What is extended producer responsibility (EPR)?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a strategy to place a shared responsibility for end-of-life product management on the producers, and all entities involved in the product chain, instead of the general public; while encouraging product design or redesign that minimizes the negative impacts on human health and the environment at every stage of the product's lifecycle. This allows the costs of processing and recycling or disposal to be incorporated into the total cost of a product. This also places primary responsibility on the producer, or brand owner, who ultimately makes design and marketing decisions for their products. It also creates a setting for recycled commodities markets to emerge, which helps support a true circular economy.
