California Stewardship Arrow Awards: How to Apply

Application Period

Applications must be submitted no later than June 15, 2010.


Application Process

Determine which award category you are applying for. Please note that the awards review panel will select the Golden Arrow Award from the applications received. Follow the steps below to submit an application:

STEP 1: Create an application cover sheet on your company letterhead, which must include the following:

  1. Business or Organization Name and website address

  2. Physical Location in California

  3. Mailing Address

  4. Contact Name, Title, Phone, Email

  5. Specify which award you are applying for (i.e., Green Arrow Award, Bow and Arrow Award, Infinity Arrow Award)

  6. One paragraph summary of the product, process or service that you are submitting for evaluation. Tell us what makes it stand out from the crowd!

STEP 2: Narrative description (maximum 3 pages narrative plus supporting attachments):

In more detail, tell us about your company and about the product(s), process(es) or service(es) you want us to evaluate by answering all of the following questions:

  1. Please describe the product, process or service in detail.

  2. How does the product, process or service demonstrate the principles of product stewardship (convenience, high collection rates, following waste hierarchy of source reduction, then reuse and recycling, etc…)

  3. How does the product, process or service demonstrate leadership in your industry?

  4. Is this a proven or potentially industry-changing product, process or service? If so, please explain.

  5. Is this a model for others? Please explain

  6. Does the product, process or service have significant immediate or long-term benefits to the environment, economy, or public health? If so, please explain and quantify the benefits if possible. For example, amount of waste reduced, amount of toxics reduced, amount of product reused, reduced threat of needle sticks, increase in jobs for recovery and recycling, etc. If you cannot quantify the benefits, please explain why.

  7. How does the product, process or service reduce waste, reduce the use of toxics, provide a safer alternative or improve the ability to reuse, repair or recycle a product?

In Addition

If you are applying for the Bow and Arrow Award for Coalition Building,
please explain whether the product, process or service demonstrates a collaborative partnership between producers, distributors, retailers, public agencies or other stakeholders that is resulting in a solution to end-of-life issues for products.

If you are applying for the Infinity Arrow Award for Service and Take-Back,
please describe how your take-back program has provided convenience and service to customers by providing product-take back for toxic or problematic products; and, if applicable, explain how your company has worked with producers and distributors of those products to develop safe storage and recovery of products and packages.

STEP 3. Logo
Company or organization logo in both web and print-compatible formats. Logos must meet our graphic requirements.

STEP 4. Photos
A minimum of two digital photos or images that demonstrate the applicant’s product or service, in both web and print compatible formats. Photos must meet our graphic requirements.

STEP 5. Video (Optional)
Video clips may be submitted. To submit a video, please provide a link to the video on YouTube or another web site.

STEP 6. Submit Application
Send the cover letter, narrative, and any supporting attachments via e-mail to awards@calpsc.org. To reduce paper waste, we are accepting applications submitted via email only.

Award Selection Criteria

The awards selection committee will consider, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Leadership
  • Innovation
  • Convenience for consumers
  • Sustainable, long-term environmental benefits
  • Potential model for others in the industry
  • Partnerships and collaboration

The decisions of the awards committee are final and the California Product Stewardship Council will not enter into any correspondence relating to those decisions.
